I searched high and low for a good picture. I had to make it good—it is Father’s Day after all, and based on the Facebook posts out there, there’s some stiff competition. Photo after photo and all I could find were Hubby’s shadow, half of his face, blurry images, half a face behind the little people, pics of the little people and me…I just knew there’d be a winner in the thousand pics in my phone.
Breakfast was calling, so I was about to dig up a family pic from yesterdays past when it hit me: those fuzzy photos, Hubby’s shadow, and the “focus on family” shots tell the true story. They’re our “30 for 30” of sorts. He always focuses on us, putting himself in the background. He’s our shoulder to lean on, sleep on, cry on, and climb on so we can reach higher. He stands behind us to provide support; it’s also the best vantage point to provide protection and applause. Hubby may take all the French fries on my plate, but he never wants all the attention. He saves that spotlight to shine on us.
Hubby sets the example of what the Lord is for us. By his living example, he’s teaching our little people and me about God’s sacrificial, life-giving, life-saving love. We see what it means to put others before ourselves; to help, bless, need, and cherish those around us; and to work and play so hard in the moment you can’t stop to capture it with a camera. Hubby mirrors God’s love that just keeps going and going and going. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
