Songbird never liked the ending to Dr. Seuss’s The Butter Battle Book. “’We’ll see…?’ What does that mean? And what’s with the blank page?” So, today, she stopped stewing over it, and googled the meaning behind it. Once she did she was surprised to learn that the book is actually about the Cold War, and that infamous blank page represents the “what’s next?”: would we blast each other to bits, find a peaceful resolution, or would the reader create his own ending? I confess I’ve been stewing over some blank pages in my own life’s book, and I’ve been content (or rather, discontent) to just whine over them. But thanks to Songbird and her googling prowess, I’m ready to close the book on 2015 and all its pesky pages with frustration, no, and unfinished scrawled across them in invisible, yet indelible ink. Her pluck and her curiosity push me to train my eyes on the new year, to watch, work, wait, and see what’s next. Trust one of my little people to kick me when I’m down—and right in the pants where I most need it. “Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.” Psalm 139:16
