Last Saturday night at our house probably didn’t look like your typical October 31. Pint-sized vampires didn’t float around. The doorbell didn’t chime every two minutes. Neither Hubby nor I sported a wig or costume, though I could’ve been a pirate in my purple headscarf. We admired the pumpkins we’d painted the week before. The little people munched on candy from a birthday party. And oh, we did perform a trick or two to get M&M to finish his mac and cheese. Though I felt a bit like we were all alone on a tiny island surrounded by a sea of reveling ghosts, ghouls, goblins, princesses, and superheroes, that extra hour of sleep was the best treat ever. I rested easy knowing we’re all on the same page: 1 Corinthians 10:31. “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Hi Robin, I feel you on this one too. This yr on the 31st we really enjoyed ourselves. We didn’t celebrate Halloween at all and it seems that all the yrs before when we did it was more than we wanted to do or just not what we wanted to do at all. I kept saying each yr that we would do something else and this yr when we didn’t do Halloween it finally felt right. My son’s birthday was on the first of this month so we celebrated just the four of us this weekend and it really was great. All along I know we never enjoyed it and I never wanted to celebrate Halloween. God was putting it on my heart and I kept going along with the world and its tradition instead. So 1 Corinthians 10:31 really spoke to me and when I finally listened this weekend it felt really good and the kids weren’t bothered by it either : ).
I’m so glad I could encourage you and that God used me to help confirm your decision. It sounds like your family celebrated the beginning of a new tradition rather than mourning the putting away of an old one. You’ve been a big encouragement to me. Thank you!
