Thanks to technology, modern transportation, and sheer force of will, I thought I could run two households. While hundreds of miles away, I called myself taking care of home, selecting wardrobes, arranging hairstyles, planning meals, fussing and praising, correcting papers, conducting piano lessons, arranging car pools, reading our Advent story, and watching Christmas performances. After all, the show must go on, this train’s gotta keep moving, time stops for no man, etc., etc. But really, that was my ego talking. Sometimes life-as-you-know-it comes to a screeching halt, or at least it should. Once I let the air out of my hot-air balloon, I saw that Hubby didn’t need me to run anything; I needed him. He could—and did—take care of the little people with one hand and re-grout the bathroom floor with the other, all while loving me from the top of his head to his ten, beautiful, very capable toes. Through Hubby, God showed me that I can take a personal day (or week or two) and trust Him to keep the world spinning quite nicely without my help. After all, my Lord retreated to the mountaintop, celebrated at a wedding, slept on stormy seas, cried with His friends, and rested for a whole day after a job well done, and saved my soul in the process. Thank you, God, for gracing me with a gift of love that keeps on giving. “For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:10
