We love birthdays around here—the cake, the food, the attention. Somehow, we make them stretch out for days before and after the actual day. With nine folks in our family, it seems like we’re always celebrating. And life should be celebrated—meaning life, that eternal gift Jesus Christ gives those who believe in His birth, life, death, and resurrection, not just that special day you first entered the world. We’ve been partying around here for several weeks, honoring births, rebirths, and new life, and Sunday morning we continued the celebration by studying these verses:

Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’

Nicodemus said to Him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?’

Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.’” John 3:3-8

Of course, no party is perfect without a delicious menu. Sunday morning, a big bowl of fruit salad graced our table (see the recipe below), along with a few other goodies. But as usual, all eyes and ears were on Jesus at the head of our gathering.

How do you feed your Spirit? With the Word, worship, prayer, or through serving others? How about fellowship? These days, we often neglect this important facet of spiritual growth, that time of sharpening iron with friends and family. We’re just too busy or too tired or we’re too involved “working” for Him. Take some time this week to gather your family and friends, eat some fruit salad, and party with Jesus. Rest in Him. Rejoice in Him. Be renewed by Him.

Blessings on your meal!

Fruit Salad To make the syrup, combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, the juice and zest of orange, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or fresh vanilla bean). Bring to a boil, simmer, and cool.

Mix together 4 pints strawberries, 2 pints blueberries, 2 cups halved red grapes, and 2 cups halved green grapes in a large bowl. Stir the syrup and fruit together and prepare to feed a lot of people.
